Sagra del Libro 

The Italian American Book Festival

6 PM to 10 PM

The Lt. Joseph Petrosino Lodge (OSIA), in collaboration with IAWA – The Italian American Writers Association, is hosting a “Sagra Del Libro.”

WHAT: In past years on a Sunday in May most bookstores remained open in Italy to support and promote its writers. This initiative was called “Celebrazione dei Libri” (Celebration of Books). Our Sagra Del Libro continues in the spirit of that movement by celebrating our Italian-American literary culture.

WHERE: At the Lodge Hall at 113 Baxter Street in Manhattan’s Little Italy.

WHO: All writers, publishers, literary event organizers and artists are invited to display their promotional materials and sell their books and services at this event. Tables will be set up for displays, books and promotional materials, and authors will be available to speak with attendees and sign books. Lively presentations or readings by the authors will make for a fascinating evening of celebrating our Italian-American writers.

Free to all. A charge of $5.00 for individual authors and publishers will reserve a spot and participate. Payment should be by check  made out to the Lt. IAWA’s Open Reading Series–Saturday, March 12, 2016–Featuring Diane Block & John Hennessy

The Italian American Writers Association will celebrate its 25th Anniversary in 2016. Since 1991, IAWA has given voice to writers through its literary series every second Saturday of the months. Readings begin with an Open Mic: IAWA-East is held even months at Sidewalk Café and IAWA-West continues at Cornelia Street Café on odd months. Visit and join us at

IAWA Presents the Ides of March in a Good Way!

WHEN:  March 12, 2016 (Saturday)    5:45 – 7:45 pm

WHO: Diane Block is a professional classical violinist who received her training at the Manhattan School of Music, with a Master’s Degree in Violin Performance in 1980. There, she developed an interest in Romantic and Modern Poetry, an interest she shared with musician friends at monthly musical and poetry salons. Eight of her poems were recently published in the prestigious European on-line literary journal Levure Littéraire No. 9. Block and cellist Terry Batts comprise the violin/cello Duo Gemini Journey, often accompanied by Fred Simpson on percussion performing at Cornelia St. Café and other venues in NYC and Long Island. 

John Hennessy is the author of two collections, Coney Island Pilgrims and Bridge and Tunnel, and his poems appear in many journals and anthologies, including Best American Poetry 2013, The Believer, Poetry, Fulcrum, Harvard Review, The New Republic,The Huffington Post, Best New Poets 2005, and The Yale Review. Hennessy went to Princeton University on a Cane Scholarship, and he received graduate degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Arkansas. In 2007-2008 he held the Resident Fellowship in Poetry at the Amy Clampitt House. Hennessy is the poetry editor of The Common, a new print magazine based at Amherst College, and teaches at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
